The Trinity CertP EMI course in France is designed to address the needs of L1 French Lecturers who are re-quired to deliver their subject content through the medium of English in French Universities and Higher Ed-ucation establishments. The course is a blended one and uses a flipped learning approach, in which candi-dates will be guided to adapt materials and tasks for their students to work on at home, and following on from this deliver lectures that are scaffolded to aid student comprehension and interaction.

As candidates on the EMI course will be familiar with their subject area, this course will primarily focus on the theory and principles of best practice in teaching in Higher Education establishments as well as the lan-guage required to communicate and instruct in English more effectively. Candidates will be taught to use a range of English language in different situations such as in lecturers, seminars and online discussions, and to design motivational tasks and adapt materials to facilitate the student learning process.

The course consists of two modules with an unassessed third module, each module building from the other in sequential lockstep. For an extra fee, the third module is on offer for those candidates who wish to be observed in class using their materials and tasks. Candidates may choose to participate in all three modules in one given time or take breaks between them. The course content will be delivered through a loop input with interactive demonstrations in the first module and with opportunities for collaborative learning, reflection and transferability to the Candidates’ own subject specialism and materials. Self-reflection is prompted through maintaining an unassessed reflective diary and an assessed final written assignment.

Au cours des dernières années, et suivant une tendance globale, un nombre croissant d’enseignants du secondaire et du supérieur ont été amenés à enseigner leur matière en utilisant la langue anglaise comme médium de transmission pédagogique. L’EMI est un terme générique incluant les enseignements EMILE. EMI signifie English Medium Instruction et est défini comme suit : L’usage de la langue anglaise pour enseigner des matières académiques dans des pays dont la première langue (L1) n’est pas l’anglais.’ (Deardon. J. 2013) Dans une classe EMI, environ 70% de la communication se fait en anglais, ce qui signifie que la transmission des contenus, les interactions, les supports et les évaluations sont ou se font en anglais.

Nombre d’établissements d’enseignement secondaire ont recours aux enseignements EMILE dans leurs sections bilingues ou européennes. Quand aux établissements de l’enseignement supérieur, ils visent à ce que leurs étudiants excellent dans les matières académiques tout en acquérant une bonne maîtrise de la langue anglaise. Les recherches démontrent que le temps d’étude effectué en anglais a un impact positif direct en permettant aux étudiants de pratiquer et d’approfondir leurs connaissances non seulement des matières académiques mais aussi de l’Anglais.

Les enseignants se retrouvent donc confrontés à la difficulté d’enseigner leur matière en anglais, qui n’est généralement pas leur langue maternelle, et ont besoin d’y être formés afin que l’apprentissage des élèves et étudiants se fasse avec succès. The ELT Hub propose une formation mixte menant à l’obtention du Trinity Certificate for Practising Teachers in EMI Skills afin d’amener les enseignants à une meilleure conscience linguistique et de les former aux spécificités de l’anglais pédagogique dont ils auront besoin pour enseigner efficacement leur matière en anglais.

To support teachers working in English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) contexts to apply English-language learning principles to their material design and develop teaching skills in the same context.

By the end of the course, course participants will be better able to:

• Recognise and be aware of the characteristics of the language of EMI
• Make use of appropriate assessment formats and criteria
• Communicate more effectively in English with students
• Use a range of language in different situations, such as lectures and discussions
• Use a range of skills for delivering instruction in English.

The Three Modules:

Module 1 is planned as a series of input sessions which will be delivered either face to face or as an online synchronous course pending pandemic restrictions. Candidates will examine the principles of EMI and As-sessment and practise the language of lecture delivery, instruction, elicitation and clarification techniques in micro teaching. They will examine appropriate interaction techniques in seminars and discussions, learn strategies for effective lecture delivery and language simplification, pronunciation and features of academic writing, and they will examine the principles of design in EMI materials and tasks. Candidates will be taught how to design language noticing tasks as well as tasks that can be measured against both content and language projected goals/outcomes in preparation for Module 2. They will also examine various testing formats and assessment criteria with a view to designing and adopting those most applicable to their own teaching situation. They will be encouraged to self-reflect by maintaining a reflective diary on their development.

Module 2 consists of small Group Zoom tutorial meetings with an allocated tutor to agree on subject specific materials for task design. Critical evaluation of chosen materials is encouraged as is learner autonomy in this module. Candidates will be expected to choose a subject-related text to adapt and from which to design learner-centred motivating tasks and to design an authentic resource, the use of which then forms the basis of their fourth assignment. They will be supported in their choice and ideas of materials adaptation and task design by their tutor. Candidates will be asked to use the materials in their classroom and keep a reflective diary on their Teacher development at this stage of the course.

Module 3 (optional and unassessed) consists of the candidates delivering lectures using their adapted materials from Module 2. Candidates will be required to record one of their lessons for assessment purposes or request a live observation. For transparency purposes, Candidates will be given a blank copy of the Tutor feedback form prior to Classroom teaching. Candidates will be asked to evaluate their performance and will receive verbal and written tutor feedback in this Module.

Les participants travailleront avec leurs tuteur EMI et d’autres enseignants en groupes d’un maximum de 12, dans un environnement professionnel et détendu. Les candidats seront tenus de participer aux deux premiers modules de la formation pour obtenir leur
certificat de Trinity College, London.

Module 1 – Session d’apport théorique (30 heures). Sessions en groupe axées sur le langage en classe et en cours magistral, les supports, l’évaluation, la conception de tâches et l’enseignement entre pairs (en face à face ou en ligne, de manière synchrone).

Module 2 – Adaptation des supports et conception de tâches (70 heures). Rendez-vous individuels sur Zoom à horaires définis avec le tuteur désigné pour discuter du choix et de la rationalité de 4 supports authentiques par rapport à un groupe d’apprenants
spécifique, et échanger sur l’adaptation des supports

Module 3 (optionnel) – Utilisation des supports en classe et observations. Les candidats enseignent à leurs classes en utilisant leurs supports adaptés et soumettent un cours filmé pour observation et retours. Les observations de cours peuvent aussi se faire sur place en fonction des circonstances et des instituts.
