People come to the Auvergne for its vast spaces, its beautiful nature and authentic culture. Whether you want to put on your walking boots, canoe down a wild river or just hole up in a country auberge you\u2019ll feel good in the Auvergne. The history of France is round every street corner here and, comfortably ensconced in our CELTA centre, we certainly feel its presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Puy you can stroll down to the local market for your shopping and you\u2019ll probably bump into some pilgrims en route as it also happens to be the crossroads for those coming from Switzerland and northern Europe en route to St Jacques of Compostela. After teaching practice it\u2019s nice to huddle round a table in one of the many taverns and restaurants in the town and with the help of some really excellent red wines from the region mull over the events of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the course is over five weeks instead of four you have less stress and extra time to discover this extraordinary region, rich in its medieval history and especially its beauty described by the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson.<\/p>\n\n\n

Quelques mots sur Robert Louis Stevenson\u00a0: n\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00c9dimbourg dans une famille ais\u00e9e, son p\u00e8re \u00e9tait un ing\u00e9nieur renomm\u00e9. De sant\u00e9 fragile, il \u00e9tait r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement emmen\u00e9 par ses parents en excursion \u00e0 la mer et \u00e0 la montagne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecteur passionn\u00e9, il d\u00e9couvrit la trilogie auverg\u00e9enne de George Sand, qui avait parcouru \u00e0 plusieurs reprises les terres velaves si bien d\u00e9crites dans ce roman. Ces romans, et en particulier \u00ab\u00a0Le Marquis de Villemer\u00a0\u00bb, dont l\u2019intrigue se d\u00e9roule dans le Puy-en-Velay, lui rappelaient les Highlands d\u2019\u00c9cosse, mais aussi l\u2019histoire des Covenanters des Highlands, dont les exploits avaient marqu\u00e9 son enfance.

Tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, il fut attir\u00e9 par la litt\u00e9rature, il abandonna ses \u00e9tudes de droit et partit vivre en France o\u00f9 il tomba amoureux de Fanny Osbourne, une peintre am\u00e9ricaine, mais celle-ci dut retourner aux \u00c9tats-Unis\u2026

Disappointed, even if he did not want to admit it and breaking with his family and friends, he left in 1878 to isolate himself in Monastier sur Gazeille where he explored the place, took notes and observed\u2026 After a month, he decided to go on a roaming trip south. To solve the problem of carrying his equipment and provisions, he chose to be accompanied by a donkey that he named “Modestine”\u2026 And off he went for a 12-day trip that has become a mythical book under the title “Journey in the C\u00e9vennes with a donkey”. A year later, he will leave for California to join his great love!
